Bryson City NC 28713 retired Married 3 Immaculate Conception I was surprised to receive the information on the 50th IHS reunion and did go on line and look at some of the information and read some of the bios. It seems that we all have gotten OLD(ER). And I must admit that I am occasionally amazed when I look in the mirror and find a white haired senior citizen, who looks something like my aunt, staring back at me.

I attended Cornell University and SUNY Cortland. I taught Science in schools in New York State and Texas and got a MS in Business Administration at the University of Wisconsin and my CPA license. I worked for the Government for 21 years and am now happily retired. My husband of 46 years, Steve, and I have three children and four grandchildren, each and everyone of them outstanding in all respects.
Over the years we have lived in several different places but finally retired to a house we built in the “middle of nowhere” in the Appalachian Mountains. We have projects enough to last two life-times and are never bored; waking up each day feeling happy and blessed to be able to do what we want to do, when we want to do it. We garden, landscape, build rock walls, read, travel and take naps. It’s all good.
I will be unable to attend the 50th reunion of the class of 1960 but send hellos to all who do

Harlingen TX 78552 retired Married 2 South Hill, Central I attended Swarthmore College, Cornell Univeristy (AB Chemistry) and SUNY Upstate Med (MD 1968). After postgraduate training in NYC and Cooperstown, and two years in the Air Force (England, East Anglia), I moved to Texas. My professional work was initially in Pulmonary Disease and Internal Medicine. From 1991 until my retirement in April 2010, I practiced general internal at VA Outpatient Clinics in McAllen, TX and Harlingen, TX. I am planning to do some VA locum tenens work in the near future.
My wife Mayra and I married in 1984. We have two children, Nicole a 22 yr old college student in San Antonio and Joshua an 18 yr old special needs high school senior with autism who is at home with us.
We enjoy the outdoors--Colorado in the summer and the Texas beach--South Padre Island. We have a cabin in the mountains in Panama where we hope to spend more time. The last six months have been spent trying to adjust to retirement and get a lot of things done that I have let slide. (I found a 1960 IHS Annual while clearing out a storage unit last week!) I spent a month (Sept to Oct 2010) in Central America as a volunteer MD with Continuing Promise 10-a joint project with the US Navy and several Non Gov Orgs (I was with Project Hope.) I think I have spent too much of my time working and been tied to my career. I hope to spend more time now with family and friends. I am looking forward to the reunion next week, and I am really appreciate the efforts of those who have organized it.

Kent WA 98042-6648 Retired Mainframe System Programmer Married 2 West Hill There is a newspaper clipping on this web site that asks “Where Are June Graduates?”. I believe that I was the lone one that was tallied as “Traveling”. I left Ithaca July 5th with $80 and my 54 Ford convertible to work my way to California. I arrived at my destination late November with lots of “growing up” under my belt. I started working for the company that was associated with the farm I grew up on. I enrolled in a JR College and took courses in agribusiness, hoping to stay in the field.

After a number of years getting student deferments, I gave up and enlisted in the Army. I ended up in finance and spent my working time at Ft Lewis, WA with a year in Vietnam. While in WA I met my wife (to be) at a USO dance and we married after my enlistment ended in 1969. We moved to San Jose, CA where my wife taught school and I began a new career in bank operations after a training period. We purchased a house and brought two children into this world. After seven years managing staff, I learned I couldn't do the delegation one needs to do as a manager. I was a “hands on” person.

I left banking and went to trade school learning a new trade – computer programming. I really loved it and it was really “hands on”. After graduating I was hired by an insurance company writing “quick and dirty” one-of programs that really expanded my knowledge. After a couple of years I had the opportunity to be trained in system programming which I took.

In early 1980, we moved back to Washington to be closer to family. I started working for an aerospace company in support of their mainframe computers while Patsy went back to (trade) school to learn programming. I stayed with system computing for almost 20 years and retired in 2000.

I have had three careers in my life and when I retired, I retired. Now I do volunteer work at Church (financial secretary), yard work at home, Church and at the neighbors as needed. We try to take a cruise each year. A few years back, I became the focal for a group for about 170 data center retirees from my employer. Our two children are doing well. Our daughter, Gina, is located in Denver and our son, Jim, is here in Seattle. No grandchildren and do not see any in the future.

Montgomery Village MD 20886-1303 Electrical Engineer, Realtor Married 3 East & West Hill, Belle Sherman Got through Cornell and the Army by '69. Moved to DC suburbs of Rockville & Montgomery Village, where I still live. Married Francie in '76. Instant family with 3 sons, the eldest is now 50 this year. Made my living designing & testing military radio receivers and systems. As 45 rpm records have become obsolete, so have discrete receiver designs. Today our cell phones have multiple receiver-transmitters as well as powerful computers built in to our cell phones. My final projects involved designing, building and testing Satellite hardware. EO1 (Earth Observing 1) is an experimental satellite on which I completed designs, and tested the proto-flight hardware. Since 2005 I have been assisting Francie in her Real Estate business. We still assist clients in buying and selling homes in the Maryland and Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC.

Gainesville FL 32603 Professor Emeritus-University of Florida Married 3 Cayuga Heights Teaching math!!; In addition to my teaching at the University of Florida, I was a grad student at Rutgers for 5 years (where I was a teaching assistant), I taught at Northern Illinois for 2 years. While at Florida, I took two sabbaticals: one at Tennessee (Knoxville) in 1979-80 and one at the University of Kentucky in Lexington.
I like canoeing, hiking, and camping.  Son Greg and I have had a blast recently fishing with grandson Zachary (4 years old).  At Blue Springs (on the Santa Fe River) last weekend he caught 8 blue gill, each about 3 inches long.

On the IHS side, I think about the impact my teachers at IHS have had on my life.  While all my math teachers were excellent, Miss Stenson, Miss DePew geometry and trigonometry), and Miss Neighbours gave me the basics few of my students saw until they were ready to graduate from college.  While I only had about 6 weeks of calculus with Miss Neighbours, it was just enough for an overview of the big ideas.  The basics I learned at IHS served me well as a math major at the University of Wisconsin and Rutgers.

I also loved taking Latin from Mrs. Ernstein (who taught French to my mother) and Miss Sicilia (two years).  Miss Sicilia was bossy, opinionated, and judgmental, but I loved her.  She always lectured us that our job was to study hard.  She hated Benjamin Franklin and Franklin Delano Roosevelt.  She thought Franklin was a scallywag, who was always looking out for his own interest.  (She claimed he was cutting deals with the British, while working for Independence.  She also hated his quote: "Honesty is the best policy because she thought you should always act honestly even if it wasn't in your best interests.  I don't remember the reasons for her distaste for FDR, but I am sure his love affairs and politics didn't sit well.)  While it may sound odd, Miss Sicilia was also helpful in my math career because she taught me what a conditional sentence is.  (Every definition and theorem is a conditional sentence.)
